That One Little Pearl Of Wisdom

insomniac's picture

Growing up, we were fed a lot of things. Among them were oversimplified & seemingly outdated catch phrases intended to teach us life lessons. Things like..

"A stitch in time saves nine"

"If you lay down with dogs, you'll wake up with fleas"

"The early bird catches the worm"

You were probably like me, and you rolled your eyes everytime your mother dispensed these little pearls of wisdom. You never really took it to heart, and you certainly didn't plan your life around them.

But, the more I experience life, the more I find truth in one of those McWisdom nuggets. No, not "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". I'm talking about "What goes around comes around". Karma. Let me tell ya. Karma doesn't just come around. It drives a fu@k!ng Mac Truck.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen it happen in my adult life. People unjustly hurting others, only to have it come back to them in unexpected ways. Seriously. I'm starting to think it's one of those mother nature things - when something becomes unbalanced, it will trigger a mechanism to get everything back on track. Like, a plague controlling overpopulation.

I'll give you an example. I worked with a girl - let's call her "Jane" - who really wanted to get ahead in her career. Instead of working hard like the rest of us gals, she decided to completely fabricate stories about her coworkers, so that she would appear to be a hero in the eyes of the boss. It was pretty unbelievable. She did this over and over. And it worked. The boss loved having his own personal Smithers, and she was promoted. Sickened by the whole experience, I bitterly resigned. Although I felt completely sabotaged and confused about how someone like Jane was able to sleep at night, I didn't seek revenge.

Six months later, when Jane was at a nearby bar, her apartment was broken into and everything she had was stolen. The thief even drove off in her car that was parked in her driveway. The police were unable to recover her belongings, or find the thief, but they found her abandoned car. A week after that, Jane was in accident. She wasn't hurt, but her newly recovered car - the ONE THING she had left- was totaled. Holy f#cking Sh#t!

That's what I'm talking about. Karma has no mercy. Infact, Karma will fake you out. Make you think your punishment is over, just to sucker punch you again like Paulie Shore. I'm curious to hear any experiences you might have had with this phenomena. It doesn't have to be negative either - maybe you've seen positive things cycle around the block as well.

I don't think much about the little pearls of wisdom we're taught when we're kids... but I've certainly become more conscious of my actions. And it's probably fair to bet that when I become a parent, I'll be telling little Billy to be careful... because "what goes around comes around".

BUSTED!

Hi, my name is Kenneth Lay.

I stole lots of money from a lot of people. You and your family were probably affected by my massive scam. I was the largest contributor to George W. Bush's campaign. I have huge fu@k1ng balls. I really thought I was going to get away with it!

Then I got busted. They put me on trial. I was so overwhelmed that my heart stopped. Now I'm dead.

Listen to Insomniac: Karma is a bitch.
