Avril Lavigne. I've seen ghosts with deeper skin complexions. Her name sounds like something you would find on a sail boat. And she makes Punky Brewster look like the Sex Pistols. But, I can forgive all of that. What I can't forgive is her new song & video "Girlfriend". It does a disservice to women everywhere.
I know, I know, why pick on poor Avril, right? Misogyny has been a part of music videos for longer than Avril's been alive. But, when the anti-female message is promoted by females, it is so much more powerful and damaging. And that's exactly what Avril's new song & video does.
I can see why young girls dig Avril. She offers an alternative to bubble-gum starlets like Jessica Simpson, but she's not dark enough to iscolate. So, when "girl power" Avril sings about sabotaging other girls in order to steal their man, it strikes a powerful cord. It's especially powerful when, in her music video, Avril physically harms her female rival, and laughs. Apparently, winning the affection of a boy is a lot more important than treating other women with respect. Nice job.
Why am I throwing a hissy fit about this? Aren't women making serious strides in society? Does the name Hillary Clinton ring a bell? Sure. But who are young girls more exposed to? Nancy Pelosi or Paris Hilton?
